Ryan describes investment in software engineering research as one potential counter move, but only if the research resources are carefully organised and directed. Ireland is an example applicable to other small and medium sized countries. Lero – the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, is one of the best known and highly regarded software-related research centres in the world. It is representative for Irelands approach and success in the global software market. Founded 2005 by Kevin T. Ryan (Centre Director), Hans-Jürgen Kugler (Industrial Director) and Klaus Pohl (Scientific Director), Lero brings together leading academic software research teams and has a strong industry focus. Irelands structured investment in research accompanied with the emergence of the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) a few years back enables the founding of Lero. SFI’s first aim was to attract world leading researchers to Ireland. The Lero is supported by SFI, by other state grants, by industry contributions and by external funding particularly the EU’s research programmes.

The talk by Kevin T. Ryan takes place October 29, 2015, 4 p.m. at paluno (Room 009, Gerlingstraße 16, 45127 Essen, Germany).
