Welcome to the Ruhr Institute for Software Technology

The software systems of the future will be characterized by widely distributed, mobile, even ubiquitous use; by the seamless interaction between physical and digital services, data and things; and by continuous adaptation to a rapidly

evolving technology and business context. IT systems that are up to these challenges enable digital enterprises to not just cope with frictional changes in their markets, but to take advantage of new business opportunities as they emerge. In research and industry projects with partners across Europe, paluno develops scientific, yet pragmatic approaches to engineer such complex software systems – for the infrastructures of the future as well as the application landscapes of today.

paluno’s research and transfer paradigm encourages mutal benefit from basic research, applied research and bilateral industry cooperations. Our research teams join competencies covering all phases and layers of software engineering, and bring in experience from application domains as diverse as insurance, automotive, health, energy, and logistics.

paluno published an industry-article “Proactive event processing in action: A case study on the proactive management of transport processes” at this year`s DEBS-conference (Distributed Event Based Systems). The article was written in cooperation with researchers of IBM Haifa and Kühne+Nagel within the FIspace-Project. The article is published in: Z. Feldmann, F. Fournier, R. Franklin, and A. Metzger, “Industry article: Proactive event processing in action: A case study on the proactive management of transport processes,” in Proceedings of the Seventh ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based Systems, DEBS 2013, Arlington, Texas, USA, S. Chakravarthy, S. Urban, P. Pietzuch, E. Rundensteiner, and S. Dietrich, Eds. ACM, 2013.

Thorsten Weyer’s contribution "Status Quo im Requirements Engineering für Embedded Systems - Herausforderungen und Lösungen durch modellbasierte Techniken" (engl. „Status Quo in Requirements Engineering for Embedded Systems – Challenges and Solutions by means of Model-based Techniques) was accepted by the program committee of the 6th Embedded Software Engineering Congress. The Embedded Software Engineering Congress takes place since 2008 and is the biggest congress for embedded software professionals in Germany. This year, the congress will take place in Sindelfingen from 2-6 December.

The first SRII Europe Leadership Summit took place in Erlangen on 27th and 28th of June. SRII (Service Research and Innovation Institute) is a nonprofit global research institute with a mission to drive research and innovation for “IT Enabled Services”.

Andreas Metzger was moderator at the panel “Future of the Internet for Services”. The panel featured short presentations in the context of Cloud Services, Internet of Things, Big Data and funding opportunities at Horizon 2020 and FI PPP. Horizon 2020, the new framework program of the European Commission, will follow the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) in 2014. The „Open Call“ of the FIspace project was presented as example for funding opportunities in FI PPP. paluno acts as Technical Architect in FIspace.

Nazila Gol Mohamadi, Thorsten Weyer, and Prof. Sachar Paulus (University of Applied Science Brandenburg) submitted an invited keynote paper at the 14th Conference on Communications and Multimedia Security (CMS‘2013). The paper titled „Trustworthy Software Development“ will be published in the conference proceedings within the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science. The keynote presentation will be held by Prof. Paulus on 26th September.

Klaus Pohl was keynote-speaker at the Seventh IEEE International Conference on Research Challenges in Information Science 29-31 May 2013 in Paris. The topic of his keynote was “Internet of Services and Internet of Things: Challenges for Information Systems Engineering and Operation”.

The 25th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE) takes place in Valencia from 17-21 June 2013. Klaus Pohl is keynote speaker at the conference. His keynote “Cockpits: Real-Time Monitoring and Adaptation Future Internet Applications” contains the project FI-WARE as cornerstone of the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (PPP) Programme, a joint action by the European Industry and the European Commission.

The submission to the International Cross-Domain Conference and Workshop on Availability, Reliability and Security (CD-ARES' 2013) titled "A Framework for Combining Problem Frames and Goal Models to Support Context Analysis during Requirements Engineering" written by Nazila Gol Mohammadi, Thorsten Weyer, Klaus Pohl together with Azadeh Alebrahim and Maritta Heisel was accepted by the program committee for publication in the conference proceedings.

Today (June, 6) the German national weekly newspaper "DIE ZEIT" contains an UDE insert due to the merger of the universities of Duisburg and Essen ten years ago. Klaus Pohl speaks about his work at paluno on page 7.
