Security Vulnerabilities in Fingerprint Sensors and Crypto Wallets

Security experts from paluno, the Ruhr Institute for Software Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen have developed a new technique that, for the first time, enables fuzz testing of protected memory areas in modern processors. Their method revealed many vulnerabilities in security-critical software. The research was funded within the CASA* cluster of excellence.

Light into the Black Box

Explainable AI aims to make the results of artificial intelligence algorithms understandable. A research team led by Prof. Dr. Klaus Pohl from paluno – The Ruhr Institute for Software Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen has developed an explainable AI technique for predictive monitoring of business processes.

Data Protection between Edge and Cloud

Edge Computing is a key technology for the Internet of Thing (IoT). However, the combination with cloud computing poses new challenges for data protection. Scientists from the software technology institute paluno at the University of Duisburg-Essen (IDE) have joined forces with NOKIA to develop an algorithm that supports the data-protection-compliant and cost-saving allocation of data-processing application components between the edge and the cloud.

Protection for Safety-Critical Systems

Trustworthiness is the basis for every good collaboration. This applies to humans as well as machines. Professor Lucas Davi and his team from the software engineering institute paluno at the University of Duisburg-Essen have developed a solution to check the integrity of embedded devices without affecting their runtime behavior.

Assistance in Modeling Business Processes

Good business process models enable companies to analyze their processes in detail. Professor Gruhn’s paluno working group develops an approach to support those responsible in modelling and thus increase the quality of the models.

EU-Project DataPorts: Highly Successful Assessment of the First Project Phase by the European Commission

13 companies and research institutions are developing a big data platform for European seaports in the DataPorts project. The software engineering institute paluno at the University of Duisburg-Essen is contributing an AI component to help logisticians make proactive decisions.

Increasing comprehensibility: How to Link Texts and Diagrams Interactively

A number of new research results have been published as part of the DFG project vgiReports. They show how texts and diagrams can be combined in interactive data-driven articles.

My Fuzzer Beats Them All! ...Does it?

Fuzzing is a popular method for detecting errors in software code. However, it is difficult to rate the performance of different fuzzing techniques. Prof. Davi’s group has developed a framework that allows a fair comparison of fuzzers based on statistical analysis.

New Open Access Book on the Foundations for Big Data Innovation

How can Europe leverage the potential of Big Data? How can data be used to create value for society and the economy? Which technologies are promising? What political and economic measures are needed? Answers to these and other question are provided by “The Elements of Big Data Value”.
