Abstract:

Business Process Management (BPM) is a mature and active research area that develops methodologies and technologies for automating and improving processes across diverse domains. These domains include manufacturing, healthcare delivery and patient treatment, logistics, data processing pipelines, and scientific discovery workflows, among others.

The growing importance of sustainability challenges traditional approaches to process management by requiring performance improvements beyond purely economic indicators. A limited understanding of the sustainability characteristics of business processes constrains organizations’ ability to monitor and, most importantly, control the environmental impact of process execution.

This talk introduces the Green BPM lifecycle, which integrates environmental sustainability considerations across all phases of process management. The talk will focus in particular on process technologies that enable and support the full Green BPM lifecycle. Additionally, it will explore the relationship between process adaptation and sustainability, and outline directions for future research.

Bio:

Dimka Karastoyanova is a professor of Information Systems at the Computer Science Department of Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. She holds a doctoral degree in Computer Science from TU Darmstadt. 

 Her current research is in the areas of data-driven, service-based, process automation and performance improvement with focus on Processes for AI and AI for Processes finding application in fields like manufacturing, logistics, supply chain management, eScience, Data Science, healthcare, public administration and others. Most notable research topic recently is autonomic process performance improvement in the context of environmental sustainability. 

Currently, she is the chair of the Board of the Bernoulli Institute. Since May 2025 Dimka is a member of the Board of IPN – the Dutch National Platform for ICT Research. Dimka is an Associate Editor of Transactions of Services Computing and Information Systems, and a member of the steering committee of EDOC. She is supporting the communities with organizing conferences, workshops and forums in different roles and is active as a reviewer for relevant conferences (e.g. BPM, EDOC, ICSOC, CoopIS, CAiSE), journals  and workshops. Dimka is leading the WG on Early Career Researchers (ECR) of Informatics Europe and is a co-organizer of the annual ECR workshop at ECSS.
